CyberPatriot training

An intensive, five-day training session in mitigating cybersecurity risks
Cadets from the Ace Basin and Hilton Head Composite Squadrons at the CyberPatriot training week.

Not everything we do at Cryptsoft is key management. This month our own Bruce Rich spent a week volunteering with Civil Air Patrol cadets in South Carolina for CyberPatriot training. Here is the squadrons’ write-up of the week.

During the week of July 6-10, several cadets from the Ace Basin and Hilton Head Composite Squadrons of Civil Air Patrol participated in CyberPatriot training. This was an intensive, five-day training session in mitigating different cybersecurity risks. Each afternoon cadets were learning cybersecurity basics and then being exposed to particular tools and issues in either a Windows or Linux environment.

This was hands-on experience and cadets were given the opportunity to develop and expand their technical knowledge and then advance their skills in practice. The week culminated with a practice competition with both Windows and Linux images, with scoring recorded on the Air and Space Forces Association (AFA) nationwide test site.

This training session was led by 2nd Lieutenant Christopher Sim, assisted by Cadet Sponsor Bruce Rich, both from the Hilton Head Composite Squadron. Bruce’s Australian employer, Cryptsoft, not only volunteered Bruce’s time and technical expertise but also contributed a high-end laptop to support the effort.

Further competitions will be held later this year, culminating in the National Competition this winter. More information on the CyberPatriot program can be found at afa.org/cyberpatriot.

The next generation of cybersecurity talent has to start somewhere. Cryptsoft was glad to lend Bruce’s time, expertise and a laptop to these cadets’ week of hands-on training, and we’ll be cheering them on through the competitions ahead. Learn more about the program at afa.org/cyberpatriot.
